Hydrogen and carbon isotope fractionation in modern plant wax n-alkanes from the Falkland Islands

چکیده
The hydrogen isotopic composition of terrestrial plant waxes (δ2Hwax) is widely used to reconstruct past hydroclimate. δ2Hwax values reflect source water or precipitation δ2H (δ2Hprecip) values, and when extracted from sediment archives, records δ2Hprecip can be generated. In order better interpret these records, modern calibrations between are required vegetation location diverge in other regions. To date, no study has examined how relate the southern mid- high-latitude maritime climatic regions where climate affected by Southern Hemisphere Westerly Wind Belt. We present first calibration on Falkland Islands analyzing n-alkane wax concentrations, δ13C 11 most common species, one lichen surface lake samples four sites Mount Usborne East Falkland. Based commonly observed plants landscape, Empetrum rubrum Cortaderia pilosa, contributing archives. calculate fractionation n-C29 alkane (ε2Hwax/precip) for all species –110 ± 17‰ (1σ, n = 22), which similar global average ε2Hwax/precip. Observed modelled monthly indicate that interpreted as mean annual ultimately establishing framework utilizing wax-based paleoreconstructions mid-latitude

Carbon isotope fractionation during aerobic biodegradation of n-alkanes and aromatic compounds in unsaturated sand
Microcosm experiments were conducted to quantify carbon isotope fractionation during aerobic biodegradation of n-alkanes (from C3 to C10) and monoaromatic hydrocarbons in unsaturated alluvial sand. In single compound experiments with n-alkanes, the largest enrichment factor was obtained for propane ( 10.8 ± 0.7‰). The magnitude of the enrichment factor decreased with increasing number of carbon...
متن کاملCarbon and hydrogen isotope fractionation by moderately thermophilic methanogens
A series of laboratory studies were conducted to increase understanding of stable carbon (C/C) and hydrogen (D/H) isotope fractionation arising from methanogenesis by moderately thermophilic acetateand hydrogen-consuming methanogens. Studies of the aceticlastic reaction were conducted with two closely related strains of Methanosaeta thermophila. Results demonstrate a carbon isotope fractionatio...
متن کاملStable carbon and hydrogen isotopic fractionation of individual n-alkanes accompanying biodegradation: evidence from a group of progressively biodegraded oils
Seven crude oils of known source and maturity, representing a natural sequence of increasing degree of biodegradation, were collected from reservoirs in the Liaohe Basin, NE China, in an effort to determine the magnitude and direction of isotopic shift of carbon and hydrogen in individual n-alkanes during microbial degradation. The results show that biodegradation has little effect on the carbo...
متن کاملHydrogen isotope fractionation during H
Hydrogen metabolism was studied in the anaerobic bacterium, Sporomusa sp. strain DMG 58, by measuring natural abundance levels of deuterium in H 2 , H 2 O, and individual fatty acids during acetogenic growth on H 2 / CO 2 . Four cultures were grown, each in medium with a distinct hydrogen-isotopic composition ( δ D-H 2 O). The δ D value of H 2 was quantified in the residual gas exiting the grow...
